road safety, traffic safety, safe roads, cebu
Safe Roads lead to a Prosperous Future.
In recent months many major road accidents in Cebu, like a 10-wheeler ran over a motorcycle driver in Minglanilla, the tourist bus that plunged into a Balamban ravine leading to 15 dead Iranians and seven children hurt through a road accident in Liloan; calls to attention the need to improve and monitor the quality of the quality of drivers and the vehicles they operate.
Concerned government agencies, such as the LTO, LTFB and PNP HPG, implement corrective actions; such as suspending the franchise of commercial transport companies involved in said incidents, subjecting vehicles and drivers to thorough inspection and examination. Government officials remind concerned agencies to improve road condition and appeal to motorists to be more careful.
However, are these enough? Are these all that we should rely on? Are these all we can do in regards to road/traffic safety in Cebu?
The local government is doing what it can within the limits of its resources, there seems to be not much response from Cebu's private sector, except to express our concerns and apprehensions over these road accidents.
The private sector, the Cebu community, can do more than just stand on the sides and watch, or just pass by and take a glance. It is time to get involved.
There will be a ROAD SAFETY FORUM to be hosted by PISM CEBU during its General Membership Meeting this September 22, 2010 at the City Sports Club Cebu.
The forum will serve as a launching pad for a new public-private partnership, a ROAD SAFETY CAMPAIGN that will address various road safety issues that affect businesses and the community of Cebu.
During this forum, experts from both government and non-government organizations will present updates on current programs to improve road safety.
